Edtech startups to adopt self regulatoru code and will adhere to a common code of conduct.

India’s largest EdTech startups, including Byju’s, Unacademy, upGrad, and Vedantu, stated that they will adopt a self-regulatory code and adhere to a “common code of conduct in a letter to the union ministry of education on Monday.

This initiative by a group of fifteen companies—which has formed an autonomous body called the ‘India EdTech Consortium’ under the auspices of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)—comes at a time when the threat of regulatory oversight looms large over the fast-growing sector. Dharmendra Pradhan, the union education minister, stated last week that his office is in discussions with the ministries of law and electronics and information technology to develop a regulatory policy.

The industry grouping also stated in its letter to the government that it would establish “a two-tier grievance redressal mechanism to ensure that business is conducted with high transparency and with customer interest in mind.”

Careers 360, Harappa Education, Times EdTech & Events Ltd, Simplilearn, Doubtnut, Classplus, and Toppr are among the other EdTech companies that have joined the IEC, with more expected to “come on board.”

This move, a first for Indian EdTech firms, comes amid a growing call for the sector to be regulated, which has benefited from a major tailwind since the launch of Covid-19 in India, with students signing up for online courses in large numbers.

Last month, Karti Chidambaram, Member of Parliament for Sivaganga in the Lok Sabha, advocated in Parliament for the need to regulate the online education sector.

Soon after, the government stated that the sector needed to be regulated.
