A major effort to boost the e-sports and gaming industries in India, Sunil Kumar Gupta, Co-Founder of the Indo European Business Forum (IEBF), has urged the central government to officially recognize e-sports as a legitimate industry. Gupta pointed out that such recognition could unlock significant opportunities for investment, innovation, and job creation, further establishing India as a leader in the global gaming landscape. Speaking to industry stakeholders, Gupta noted the rapid growth of e-sports in India, fueled by a youthful population and enhanced digital connectivity. He called on the government to implement policies that would not only validate the sector but also create a structured framework for its regulation and development. “India has a unique chance to become a powerhouse in the global e-sports arena. Recognizing e-sports as a legitimate industry will draw in international investments, nurture local talent, and generate a wealth of job opportunities,” Gupta stated. This appeal is part of a larger movement aimed at formalizing e-sports in India. The government has recently classified e-sports as a multi-sport event under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, a decision that has been welcomed by industry leaders. The inclusion of e-sports in events like the Asian Games further highlights its growing recognition as a competitive sport. Experts emphasize the importance of differentiating e-sports from traditional gaming and gambling activities for its success. “E-sports is a legitimate sport that requires skill, strategy, and teamwork. It should not be confused with iGaming or fantasy gaming,” remarked Tarun Gupta, Founder of Ultimate Battle, India’s top e-sports platform. As the industry looks forward to further developments, stakeholders are hopeful that formal recognition will lead to a thriving ecosystem, positioning India as a global hub for e-sports.
