WhatsApp now lets you start new conversations that entirely disappear.
You can set the time to 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days for disappearing chats.
WhatsApp has announced that its much-anticipated disappearing messages feature will now include the disappearing chat functionality. WhatsApp users can now enable disappearing messages for all new chats, which means the entire chat will disappear after the specified time, which can be 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.
“Not all messages need to stick around forever,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on Facebook announcing the new disappearing messages option on WhatsApp.
Previously, the time limit for disappearing messages was only 24 hours, but WhatsApp has added two more options to the standard disappearing messages. According to the company, these ephemeral chats will also be deleted from WhatsApp servers.
When you enable disappearing messages for all one-on-one chats, your existing messages or chats are unaffected. Similarly, the option of disappearing messages for the entire chat has no effect on existing group conversations; however, you can send disappearing messages to the group at any time by turning on disappearing messages in the group settings. To prevent misuse, the admin of the group can restrict the privileges of turning on the feature to only admins. New group chats, on the other hand, can be set to disappear with the new option.
When you enable disappearing messages for all new chats, a notification will appear inside the chat indicating that the feature is enabled. The notification will also state that disappearing messages are enabled by default, so your contact does not think you used that feature specifically for them.
Despite the fact that the disappearing messages feature appears to be a useful feature that will destroy all messages once their purpose has been served, WhatsApp warns that it should only be used with trusted contacts. This is due to some flaws in the feature. For example, if you forward a disappearing message to another chat, it will not disappear.
