Nihal Sarin Qualifies for Esports World Cup 2026 Chess Event

Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin has officially secured qualification for the chess event at the upcoming Esports World Cup 2026 through the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) leaderboard standings.

Representing Indian esports organization S8UL, Nihal becomes one of the few Indian players to earn a place at the prestigious tournament, joining fellow Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram.

The Esports World Cup chess competition is scheduled to take place from August 11 to 15 in Paris and will feature a prize pool of USD 1.5 million (approximately ₹14.3 crore). The larger Esports World Cup festival will run from July 6 to August 23, bringing together more than 2,000 players from over 100 countries across multiple esports titles.

Strong Performances Across the CCT Season

Nihal secured qualification through consistent performances throughout the Champions Chess Tour season.

The circuit included major tournaments such as the Speed Chess Championship 2025 and Chess.com Open 2026, alongside the Titled Tuesday Grand Prix events spread across Autumn, Winter, and Spring splits.

Although Nihal narrowly missed direct qualification through the Chess.com Open after finishing fourth, he continued collecting valuable leaderboard points through strong performances across multiple events.

A runner-up finish during the Spring Split proved crucial in helping him reach a total of 139 leaderboard points, ultimately securing his place at EWC 2026.

Return to the Global Stage

This will mark Nihal Sarin’s second appearance at the Esports World Cup.

At the 2025 edition, he qualified through the Last Chance Qualifier and impressed with a quarterfinal finish before being eliminated by eventual champion Magnus Carlsen.

Speaking after qualification, Nihal said the season demanded consistency across several tournaments and formats over an extended period.

He also stated that competing at last year’s event helped him better understand the level of competition at the global stage and motivated him to return stronger this season.

Aravindh and Pranesh Also in Focus

Meanwhile, Aravindh Chithambaram had already secured qualification earlier this year through DreamHack Atlanta and will participate in the tournament’s Play-In stage.

Another S8UL Grandmaster, Pranesh M, narrowly missed qualification through the CCT leaderboard but still remains in contention through the upcoming Last Chance Qualifier.

Revised Format for EWC 2026 Chess

This year’s Esports World Cup chess tournament will feature a new two-phase format.

The competition begins with a Play-In stage featuring players from the Last Chance Qualifier and DreamHack Atlanta. Successful players from this stage will advance to the Group Stage.

Nihal has directly qualified for the Group Stage through the CCT rankings, giving him a major advantage heading into the tournament.

The Group Stage will feature 16 players divided into two groups competing in double-elimination brackets, with the top players progressing to the playoffs.

IFeS President Raj Kumar Sharma Reacts

Reacting to Nihal Sarin’s qualification, Raj Kumar Sharma, President of the International Federation of Esports (IFeS), praised the achievement and highlighted the growing importance of chess within the esports ecosystem.

“Nihal Sarin’s qualification once again showcases the incredible level of talent India possesses in competitive chess and esports. Competing at the Esports World Cup against some of the best players globally is a huge achievement,” Sharma said.

He further added that the inclusion of chess at major esports events is helping bridge traditional mind sports with modern competitive gaming audiences.

“Chess has always been a game of strategy, discipline, and mental strength. Seeing it receive a global esports platform is helping expand its reach to younger audiences worldwide,” he stated.

Sharma also praised Indian players for consistently performing at international events and said their success is inspiring the next generation of esports and chess talent in the country.

With Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram set to represent India at the Esports World Cup 2026, Indian fans will be hoping for another strong performance on one of esports’ biggest global stages.
