After Google, now Oppo is reportedly working on its own chipset to reduce dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo is said to be working on its own chipset, which it plans to unveil in 2023. Google, Apple, and Samsung are among the companies who have released their own mobile chipsets.

During Oppo’s Inno Day 2022 annual event, the firm unveiled a neural processing unit (NPU) dubbed MariSilicon X. The chipset is designed to boost the device’s photography capabilities while also giving AI power.

Oppo’s integrated circuit (IC) design subsidiary Shanghai Zheku is working on an application processor (AP) chipset, according to a report by IT Home. It is planned to be unveiled in 2023 and go into mass production the following year.

Oppo’s forthcoming chipset is believed to be manufactured using the 6nm production node of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). In addition, the company is working on a system on a chip (SoC) that will be disclosed in 2024 and will be based on TSMC’s 4nm production node.

Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Huawei are said to have hired chip developers and AI professionals for Oppo. With the new chipset, the corporation will be able to minimise its reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek.

At this time, it is unclear whether the upcoming chipset is intended for low-cost or high-end devices. The chipset will give the company more control over their devices by allowing them to tweak performance as needed.

Another major benefit of having your own chipset is that you do not have to compete with other smartphone makers for chipset supplies. The global market has been battling a chipset scarcity for some time now and it is projected to continue for the foreseeable future.
