India’s ambition of becoming a prominent player in the global semiconductor market took a significant leap forward as Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) and CG Power commenced the construction of semiconductor plants in Gujarat and Assam.
In a virtual ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several dignitaries including industry leaders and government officials, the foundation stones were laid for Tata Electronics’ Semiconductor fabrication facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) and an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon, Assam. CG Power’s OSAT facility also marked its inception during the event.
“This is a historic moment for India. Today, we are creating history and taking a big step towards a bright future,” remarked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the monumental significance of the occasion. The groundbreaking ceremony for the three semiconductor manufacturing plants underscores India’s aspirations to emerge as a major semiconductor hub on the global stage.
Tata Electronics’ partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) heralds the development of India’s first AI-enabled state-of-the-art Fab. This collaboration aims to revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing in India, catering to diverse market demands ranging from automotive to artificial intelligence.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed pride in the milestone achieved, noting the strategic significance of the semiconductor manufacturing hubs in Gujarat and Assam. With a focus on fostering a robust semiconductor ecosystem, the initiative is poised to position India as a preferred destination for semiconductor manufacturing.
The semiconductor plants, with their cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art facilities, signify India’s growing prowess in the semiconductor domain. As the nation strides towards technological self-reliance and innovation, the groundbreaking ceremony marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a global semiconductor powerhouse.
