Microsoft Brings AI-Powered Photo Editing Features to Windows

New Delhi, Updated: Feb 23, 2024, 12:11 IST

Microsoft has announced a significant update for its Photos app, introducing AI-powered editing features to both Arm64 devices and Windows 10 devices. With this update, Microsoft aims to enhance user experience by offering advanced editing capabilities, aligning itself with competitors like Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy 24 series phones. The update includes features such as Generative Erase, Blur Background, and Remove and Replace Background, bringing powerful editing tools to desktop Windows users.

The new update, available to Windows Insiders on Windows 10 in the Release Preview Channel starting February 22, requires users to update their Windows to version number 2024.11020.21001.0 or higher to access the latest features.

Generative Erase Feature

One of the key highlights of the update is the Generative Erase feature, which empowers users to remove unwanted objects or distractions from their photos using generative AI. This feature utilizes AI algorithms to seamlessly erase objects from photos, even in large areas, creating a realistic result. Users can adjust brush size, add or remove masks, and have full control over the erasing process.

Background Editing Features

In addition to Generative Erase, Windows users will also benefit from two other background editing features: Blur Background and Remove and Replace Background. The Blur Background feature enables users to create a bokeh effect that focuses on the foreground subject while blurring the background. On the other hand, Remove and Replace Background allows users to cut out the foreground subject and replace the background with a solid color or another image, facilitating creative editing for portraits, stickers, or memes.

Availability and Compatibility

These new AI-powered editing features are available in the Photos app for Windows 11 for Arm64 devices and are now accessible to Windows 10 users for the first time. Previously exclusive to Windows 11, these features are now accessible to Windows 10 users, expanding the reach of AI editing capabilities across different Windows platforms.

According to Microsoft, Arm64 devices, powered by processors that use the ARM architecture, benefit from the Photos app’s AI editing features due to their long battery life and portability.

Stability Fixes and Improvements

In addition to the new features, the update also brings various stability fixes and improvements, enhancing overall performance and user experience.

Microsoft’s efforts to introduce advanced AI-powered editing features reflect its commitment to providing innovative solutions to users and staying competitive in the ever-evolving tech landscape. With Generative Erase, Blur Background, and Remove and Replace Background, Windows users can now enjoy enhanced photo editing capabilities right from their desktop devices.
