Play as You Download in Android 12

Google’s Annual summit for game developers unveiled a new feature to improve the game delivery experience. This feature will be available in devices with android 12 OS or later and it smartly removes the wait out of downloading Large games.

This new feature allows users to play game while game assets are downloaded in the background. Google says, As the game quality is improving, their size increases leading to downloads that consume time. But this feature will allow the user to play the game without waiting for longer. Once the feature is implemented, games are ready to open 2x faster.

Play as you download relies on  Android’s Incremental File System, a “special-purpose Linux virtual file system allowing execution of a program while its binary and resource files are still being downloaded in the background” hence only the new version of android can take advantage of “Play As You Download” Feature.
