TikTok is rolling out a new option for U.S. Android users to download its app directly from its official website, allowing them to bypass the Google Play Store.
This decision comes in response to increasing scrutiny from regulators and ongoing disputes regarding app store policies.
By providing an alternative download method, TikTok is joining other companies that are looking into direct distribution to retain control over updates and user data. Users will be able to install the app manually through Android installation kits (APKs) available on TikTok’s website. While this approach could offer more flexibility, experts caution that avoiding traditional app stores might lead to security issues, as direct downloads do not undergo the same vetting process. TikTok has not yet provided a similar option for iOS users, given that Apple’s App Store policies are more stringent.
This development underscores the changing landscape of mobile app distribution and the increasing demand for alternative platforms beyond the major app stores.
