Widespread internet outage that took down major websites

Major websites and applications went down for some time on Thursday in a widespread outage linked to content distribution network Akamai. However, soon akamai confirmed that it fixed the issue. Akamai is a global content delivery network that helps to move data across the internet. The problem appears like came from an outage with the Edge DNS service provided by Akamai

The popular company oracle also accused akamai as the source of the issue since the outage also impacted some Oracle cloud properties, but it said resources within its cloud service were not affected.

“We have implemented a fix for this issue, and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations,” said Akamai spokesperson Tim Whitman. “We will continue to monitor to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated.”

The edge DNS service from Akamai is for finding the right IP addresses to use when people try to go to different websites and protects against distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attacks.
