China launches campaign to clean up apps

China has announced a 6 months-long campaign to clean up applications that violates consumer rights, cybersecurity and disturbing market order. The campaign was launched on Friday by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The order is part of a wider effort to crack down on tech industries and police use of personal information. Authorities have ordered fines and other penalties for some of China’s biggest tech companies. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology identified 22 specific scenarios that required urgent rectification include malicious blocking of website links and…

An AI-enabled system for detecting social distance breaches

A team of researchers developed an AI-empowered video surveillance system used to observe and inform social distancing breaches without compromising privacy. They demonstrated it by keeping image processing gated to a local network of cameras, thereby outdoing the necessity to store sensitive data in a central server. They conducted the case study at Gold Coast Airport which, pre-COVID-19 had 6.5 million passengers annually with 17,000 passengers on-site daily. Hundreds of cameras cover 290,000 square meters with hundreds of shops and more than 40 check-in points. Experimenters lightweight and cutting-edge algorithms for…

Machine learning applications do not need a huge amount of data for learning

A group of researchers from the University of British Columbia has discovered that some machine learning applications can learn from less data. They published their paper in the journal “nature machine intelligence”. The team interprets the testing they performed with machine learning applications created to predict certain types of molecular structures. In this new effort, researchers found that machine learning applications such as spotting people in photographs do not need huge amounts of data to be useful. The discovery paves the way towards the scope to develop more machine learning…

Faster & efficient robotic window cleaner

A new robotic window cleaner has been made by researchers that ensure more potential than the current methods. As per the note released by one of its co-founders, Mohammed dabri, their robotic window will increase efficiency and abolish the risk of injuries. Mohammed dabri says, they developed a robotic window cleaner after witnessing the tragic death of a window cleaner who fell from the 10th floor of a building. “Then, a man lost his life just so the windows are cleaner for a few weeks, which is very unfair trade,”…

Latest energy dissipation device: Simple & cost-effective

University at Buffalo engineers developed the latest energy dissipation device claimed to be having wide applications in transportation & safety. The device is cost-effective since it uses low-cost metallic materials and it has a simple design. The device is designed in a way to possess both high stiffness( the ability to bear loads and resist collapsing) and high damping which means it can dissipate energy. It has various applications from automobiles, and ship buffers to helicopters, drones and more.   “Most energy absorbers carrying high stiffness work by crushing or…

Mixed precision approach for modelling large geospatial datasets

The international team of researchers could speed up the modelling of large geospatial datasets with benchmark accuracy when implemented on a computing system based on highly parallelized graphics processor units. Computers can perform large calculations in a short time. But due to the constraint on the way the digital system stores data, calculation resulting in a longer sequence of digits will be curtailed. Accumulation of precision errors in geospatial datasets can lead to faulty modelling outcomes. The latest development in the field seems to be an elegant solution for this…
